Our History

  • Portslade United Reformed Church began life in 1875 when the Fishersgate Congregational Mission started meetings in a tin hut. It then spread to a barge in Shoreham Harbour.
  • In 1903 the first Church was built in St Aubyns Road. This is now our Church hall.
  • In 1932 the site in Station Road was bought and the Church built and opened. This is the present Church building.
  • In 1972, the Congregational Church in England and Wales and the Presbyterian Church of England united to form the United Reformed Church. Portslade & West Hove Congregational Church became Portslade United Reformed Church.
  • In 1984 Portslade URC celebrated its centenary.
  • In 1994, the neighbouring premises at 52 Station Road were purchased from Bakers & Son Funeral Directors. The premises were refurbished and connected to the Church. These rooms are now in use throughout the week and are part of the Church's community outreach.
  •  In 2001, the Church building was refurbished, the old wooden pews were removed to make way for new carpet and chairs and a new, more modern look

Portslade United Reformed Church

We are part of the Hove and Portslade Pastorate, which also includes Hounsom Memorial URC in Hangleton and Central URC in Central Hove.

Our Minister is the Reverend Alex Mabbs.

We are also involved with the other local Churches in the Portslade area, through the work of Portslade Churches Together (P.C.T.) which includes the Church Of England, Baptist and Roman Catholic denominations.

We are situated between Portslade Railway Station, to the north and the A259, to the south and are on the corner of St Aubyns Road and Station Road.
